Banned Stuff

( ⇪ House Rules )

(There are also Recommended Bans in the campaign-setting-specific House Rules section linked above.)

Banned Acts

Everyone should read this section.
Committing a banned in-game act carries the same consequences as a banned out-of-game act.
Some acts that warrant this include:

  1. Things Mr. Welch Is No Longer Allowed to Do in an RPG
  2. Pazuzu doesn’t give a shit about you, and will not answer your summons.
  3. No wishing for more wishes.
  4. No improving “Improved Critical” with an action point.

Banned Character Options

See the various ban sections below (such as “Banned Races”)

Banned Races

The following races are banned from player access and similarly banned from GM access on the grounds of them being silly, broken, updated, or useless.

  • Dvati (not descriptive enough, so they’re too problematic to be viable)
  • Kender (they basically have in-fluff justification to steal)
  • Dragon Magazine #306 LA+0 Racial Variants (Aquatic, Arctic, Deep, Desert, Magic-Blooded, Wild; they don’t have prerequisites and the author has said the intent was for them to be a GM tool, not a player option.)
  • Incarnate Construct template (really poorly written, thus broken)
  • Unseelie Fey template (uses rolls to determine whether the character has powerful abilities such as flight and blindsight)

Banned Classes

The following classes are recommended to be banned from player access on the grounds of them either being silly, broken, updated, or useless.

  • Totem Druid (broken, doesn’t function, or is vastly overpowered as-written)
  • Truenamer (allowed, as it’s fixed in this setting through class fixes and skill advantage )
  • Magical Swordsage variant (either broken as all hell, or too OP to even consider it)

Banned Prestige Classes

The following prestige classes are recommended to be banned from player access on the grounds of them either being silly, broken, updated, or useless.

  • Dweomerkeeper (ask for its Supernatural Spell ability to be rewritten)
  • Geomancer (ask for its Spell Versatility ability to be rewritten)
  • Illithid Savant (even Tippy calls this the most broken class in the game)
  • Planar Shepherd
  • Psychic Assassin (it was replaced by the Psionic Assassin)

Banned Spells

The following spells are recommended to be banned from player access (and highly suspect even when a GM is using them except for “ charged incantations”) on the grounds of them either being silly, broken (doesn’t work or destroys the game), updated, or useless.

  • astral projection (the one-spell save game trick; duplicates items as-written)
  • gate (and derivatives)
  • genesis (no fast-time planar trait for you!)
  • ice assassin
  • invoke magic (maybe, so ask)
  • mage’s disjunction
  • magic jar
  • mindrape (yes, this is a thing)
  • miracle
  • modulate (D338) was replaced with wand modulation (CS)
  • polymorph any object
  • planar binding (and derivatives)
  • shapechange
  • shivering touch (including derivatives, unless you use the House Rules update)
  • simulacrum
  • teleport through time
  • true seeing (and derivatives)
  • wind wall (fixed through House Rules)
  • wish

Banned Powers

The following powers are recommended to be banned from player access (and highly suspect even when a GM is using them except for “ charged communals”, the psionic equivalent of charged incantations) on the grounds of them either being silly, broken (doesn’t work or destroys the game), updated, or useless.

  • bend reality
  • genesis
  • hypercognition
  • mind switch
  • mind switch, true
  • psychic reformation
  • reality revision

Banned Flaws

The following flaws are recommended to be banned from player access on the grounds of them either being silly, broken, updated, or useless. See the section on Character Flaws for more information. Keep in mind, some of the non-banned feats require you be a commoner.
